If you are a hiker and you don’t have enough time, expenses and energy for a long, exhausting and costly hike into far distance areas of Nepal, then a hike to Champadevi hills is best suited for you. At the height of 2278m, it is the third highest hill situated at the southern part of the Kathmandu city and is one of the famous hiking destination available around the Kathmandu valley. A day hiking provides you overview of the whole Kathmandu valley including Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts with the beautiful eye catching and panoramic view of the mountains and its ranges such as Annapurna, Langtang, Mt. Everest, Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lakpa etc. along with the various green hills surrounding the valley. The hike also provides you with the experience of high lands and remote areas of the Nepal. This hike also offers a visit to Buddhist Monastery that backs to olden times to visit.
During the hike, you can see Chandragiri on your right which is the highest hill around the Kathmandu Valley and Fulchoki Hill on your left. Also, you can observe Khokana, Pharping and Bagmati River which carries historical importance in Nepal.
Apart from this, few distance away from Pahiro you can visit Dakshinkali temple which is one of the holiest temple devoted to Hindu mighty goddess Kali or Pharping which is one typical village of Newar ethnic people so you can watch and experience Newari people’s way of life and culture.
The starting point of the hike is Pahiro which takes about 45 minutes from Thamel to the starting point of hiking by private vehicle. After walking about half an hour through the pine forest on the stone paved path you will reach Hattiban resort. The trail then swings on a roundabout curve towards the south and takes another 3 hours walk into the forest (consisting generally pine trees) to reach the open shrine of Champadevi. The trail is well developed with the stone paved path and staircases with some part of the trail consist of unpaved paths. The views of the central and western Himalayan ranges are simply outstanding from hereabouts. If you want to continue to climb, then you can reach up to Bhasmasur hill which is another higher hill than Champadevi or you can hike straight downwards from the Champadevi shrine to Macchegaun, Kritipur then, back to Kathmandu City.
If you have some energy left then, there is an alternative return route for you. Approximately an hour hiking downward following the same route to Pahiro from Champadevi shrine, you reach to a point where the trail gets separated into, one the same route you come from and another downward from your left. This route contains a steep downward descent into the jungles following the stone paved path and staircases which ultimately leads to Champadevi Mai temple. Here onwards, you get to see human settlements. Now a walk of about 30 mins on the motorway to Khahare gives you the opportunity to observe sub-urban areas where the classical and modern Nepalese lifestyle meets. From Khahare, a private vehicle will take you to Kathmandu City which will take about 45 mins depending on traffic conditions.
This one day trip can implore your spiritual senses and bring you a step closer to Mother Nature via observing greenery and the beautiful sights that the Champadevi trail had offered.
